Concerning What This Registry Cannot Hold

The preceding entries were compiled by my own hand, from charters, ledgers, and the open boasts of guildmasters. What follows was not. These pages were added to my registry by a hand I did not see, on paper I did not buy, in the season after I asked one question too many about the ruins of Amber's Call. I have chosen to leave them. Judge for yourself whether that was wisdom or the first sign that I, too, have begun to be used.

Some orders keep no charter, raise no banner, and pay no dues. They are not guilds but vigils — bound not by profit but by a thing they have agreed to watch so that others need not. The mundane registry cannot hold them, for they do not wish to be held. What follows is offered not as record but as warning: that when the seals thin and the Age turns, the hands that move against the dark are not always the hands you can see.

Named Herein

Three such vigils are named in these pages: the Conclave of Wardens, the Conclave of the Sealed Gate, and the Seekers of the Marked. Others are only whispered — the Illuminated Order of the Silver Dawn, who teach the veils; the Order of the Final Threshold, who have each died and returned; the Oneiric Circle, who walk the dream-roads. Of these, this registry says only: they exist, and they are watching the same horizon.
